Passionman From the Comfort of Your Computer

If all goes according to plan, we should have a live streaming video of the swim, the finish line, and the post race awards ceremony. So, if you’re trying to watch your family or friends collapse on the finish line and can’t make it to the race this is probably going to be your best opportunity.

The video will be linked from Ustream found here

Wet Conditions: What to Look Out For

Posted in Uncategorized on April 14, 2009 by dmg025

Currently, the weather forcast at weather.com is predicting showers for Sunday.  The Passionman race will be held rain or shine so you might want to consider some of the following advice:

  • Bring plastic bags to keep your gear dry at the transitions
  • If you don’t have plastic bags, flip your shoes upside down so water doesn’t collect in them
  • When biking, break early and take turns slowly especially if you are inexperienced with road bikes
  • If you have rain tires, use them.
  • Avoid slick surfaces like the lines painted on the road or metal grates/manholes
  • Change socks at T2 to prevent blisters
  • Wear sunglasses with low light lenses to help keep the rain out of your eyes

I found some of this information at the trifuel forums…and some of it I just made up.

Planning on Drinking Before the Race?

Posted in Uncategorized on April 10, 2009 by dmg025

Before everyone heads off to their fraternity or sorority formals or even just to Bull Run for a few beers, take a look at what the experts have to say about the effects of alcohol on training/race performance:

From a study done at UC San Diego there are strong negative effects associated with alcohol.  These include: dehydration, depleted electrolytes, impaired ability to regulate temperature, and decreased balance and coordination.   This UC San Diego article can be found here.

Beer

But, I don’t need an expert to tell me that a hangover is going to impede my workout routine…And everyone knows that “experts” never have any fun.

In an interesting forum post at trifuel someone asked whether or not the other athletes abstained from drinking during their training period. After a few relevant posts, the forum quickly turned into a discussion of favorite IPA’s and micro brews…after all, sound mind and sound body go hand in hand.

Practice Your Transitions

Posted in Uncategorized on April 9, 2009 by dmg025

With the race less than 10 days away, we encourage all racers to do a practice run with all 3 legs of the race.  The trial doesn’t need to be done at race pace but is useful for getting an idea of when you need to expend and conserve your energy.  It’s also helpful to practice the transitions a few times to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.  The smallest mistake in planning can cause serious damage on race day.

Try to minimize outfit changes.  If you can swim bike and run in the same clothes you will be much better off.

Don’t forget a towel to dry your feet at T1

Bring an extra pair of goggles…just in case

Wear a light running watch to keep a steady pace and mark laps at landmarks or turns
